Reminder Fatigue: Why Notifications Stop Working
You set the reminder with the best intentions. Six o'clock arrives, the phone buzzes, you glance at it and swipe it away. Tomorrow the same thing happens. Eventually something odd sets in: the reminder is still arriving, and you have stopped seeing it. The problem is usually not that reminders do not work. It is that we have become very good at ignoring them.
What is reminder fatigue?
Consider what competes for your attention on an ordinary day: email, messages, calendar alerts, delivery updates, news, promotions, banking. Somewhere in that queue sits “Go for a run.” The phone has no idea which of those matters to you. It delivers another rectangle.
The cost of those interruptions is measurable. In a 2015 study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Stothart, Mitchum and Yehnert found that simply receiving a notification disrupted performance on an attention-demanding task, even when participants never picked up the phone. The alert did not have to be answered to cost something.
More recent work puts a number on it. In “Attention hijacked”, published in Computers in Human Behavior in 2026, Fournier and colleagues measured a temporary slowdown in cognitive processing of roughly seven seconds following a smartphone-style notification. The size of the disruption tracked how relevant the notification seemed and how habitually the person checked their phone. Notably, how often someone checks their phone predicted disruption better than total daily screen time did.
Every notification draws on the same limited resource. When everything asks for attention, some of it inevitably becomes background noise. That is reminder fatigue: the reminder is still being delivered, and it has stopped being read.
The reminder is often not the problem
Two notifications arrive at six o'clock. The first says:
Gym, 6:00 PM
The second says:
“Remember why you started. You wanted to feel confident again, have more energy, and prove to yourself you could stick with something. Just get through the door today.”
Both point at the same action. They carry very different information. The first tells you what you planned. The second tells you why you cared enough to plan it.
That gap matters because the person who sets a reminder is rarely in the same state as the person who receives it. Sunday you cheerfully books three sessions. Wednesday-at-six you is tired, hungry and negotiating with the sofa. The motivation was obvious when you wrote the reminder, so you did not write it down. By the time it arrives, that context is gone, and “Gym, 6:00 PM” does not bring it back.
Why do we stop noticing reminders?
Reminder fatigue has more than one cause, and the fix depends on which one you have.

1. There are simply too many
Notifications are useful precisely because they interrupt, and interruption has a price. Shamsi Iqbal and Eric Horvitz at Microsoft Research found a neat tension in their 2010 field study, “Notifications and Awareness”: people knew alerts were disruptive but still wanted them, because they supplied awareness of what was arriving. When notifications were switched off, some participants simply interrupted themselves instead, checking email manually.
Apple makes the same point to developers. Its Human Interface Guidelines for notifications advise sending only timely, high-value information and warn against notifying someone repeatedly about the same thing, on the grounds that people will just turn the app's notifications off. More reminders are not automatically better reminders.
2. Every reminder starts to look the same
Think of the alerts you dismiss without reading: meeting in ten minutes, time to drink water, complete your daily goal, you have not opened this app today. When dozens of messages share a format, the brain has little reason to treat any one of them as special. Familiar becomes predictable, and predictable becomes ignorable.
Recurring reminders suffer most. A message can work the first few times and then quietly become part of the furniture. If you have snoozed the same reminder fourteen times, the fifteenth identical copy is unlikely to be the one that changes anything.
3. It carries information but no meaning
Most reminders are written as instructions: go running, study Spanish, call Mum. But at seven in the evening you do not need your phone to tell you that you planned to exercise. You remember. Knowing was never the problem.
What has gone missing is why Sunday you decided it mattered. That is a different job, and it is the one a plain task name cannot do. Sometimes a reminder should not add information. It should restore context.
4. The timing is wrong
A well-written reminder at the wrong moment is still useless, which is why notification research pays attention to interruptibility. In a 2015 study in Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Okoshi and colleagues delivered notifications at natural breakpoints in people's activity rather than at arbitrary moments. Across 30 participants over 16 days, that cut frustration by 28 percent among users who were especially sensitive to interruption timing.
Operating systems now reflect this. Apple's guidance on managing notifications separates notifications into interruption levels and tells developers to reserve the more intrusive ones for information that is genuinely time-critical. Timing is part of the message. A prompt to prepare for tomorrow's presentation is useful tonight and worthless while you are driving home.
Should you just turn everything off?
The obvious response to all this is to disable the lot. The evidence says that overcorrects.
In a 2019 experiment in Computers in Human Behavior, Fitz and colleagues changed how participants received notifications. Batching them into three deliveries a day was associated with lower stress and greater well-being. Removing notifications entirely produced more anxiety and fear of missing out than the default.
So the target is not a silent phone. It is one where notifications have to earn the interruption, which means being deliberate about what reaches you, when it arrives, and what it actually says.
How do you make reminders work again?
Change the system rather than adding more notifications to it.
Delete the ones you do not need
Start by subtracting. Go through your recurring reminders and ask whether anything would happen differently if each one stopped arriving. If the answer is no, remove it. Five reminders you still read beat twenty-five you have trained yourself to dismiss.
Replace the instruction with the reason
Instead of “Go for a run”, try “You said you wanted to run your first 10K this year. Today is part of that.” Instead of “Work on side project”, try “You started this because you wanted to build something that is yours. Give it thirty minutes tonight.” The action is unchanged. The context is not.
Write it while you are still motivated
Do not wait until motivation has gone to work out how to recover it. When a goal still feels exciting, capture that: write why you are doing it, record twenty seconds of voice, save a photo. You are leaving something behind for the version of you who will not feel like it.
Make it unmistakably yours
Compare “Time to work out!” with “Remember that photo from last summer? You said you wanted to feel that strong again.” The first could have been written for ten million people. The second could only have been written for you, and that is the whole difference. Aim at the moment of resistance
Do not automatically remind yourself when the activity starts. Ask when you actually decide to abandon it. If the gym session is at 6:30 but you make the call while leaving work at 5:30, then 5:30 is the valuable moment. If you want to stop ordering takeaway, nine in the morning is useless and half an hour before you usually order is not.
Vary anything that repeats
If the identical message appears every Monday at seven, you will know what it says before reading it. Rotate between a reason, a memory, a note from yourself, a photo, and a short recording made when the goal still mattered.
